Can Invisalign Fix an Overbite?

Invisalign has gained massive popularity since it was first introduced on the market over two decades ago. Virtually invisible, comfortable, and less invasive than metal braces, most of our patients want to know if they qualify for Fox Point Invisalign treatment.

While Invisalign can successfully treat a wide range of orthodontic issues, you may wonder if they are suited for your overbite.

Here's what you need to know.

What Is an Overbite?

Overbites are quite common orthodontic issues. In fact, it's estimated that about 70% of children show signs of an overbite. While the reasons can vary from genetics to abnormal teeth growth to habits like prolonged thumb sucking, what you need to know is that an overbite occurs when the front upper teeth overlap the lower ones.

While a mild overbite may not cause any cosmetic concerns, it can still affect your oral health. If left untreated, an overbite can lead to:

Can Invisalign Fix Overbites?

It depends on how severe your overbite is. Recent studies have shown that Invisalign is effective in treating mild to moderate overbites. If your overbite is more severe, then your dentist may recommend metal braces instead.

How Can Invisalign Treat an Overbite

Invisalign are custom-made plastic trays that you will have to wear for about 20-22 hours every day. These trays apply enough pressure on your teeth to force them to move into their correct position.

As the treatment progresses, you will receive new trays every other week to help push the teeth back into their proper placement.

With every new appointment, the dentist will slightly increase the amount of pressure the aligners are putting on your teeth. This way, your teeth will move into their right position and your bite will be corrected as well.

While part of the appeal of Invisalign is that you can remove the trays, it's important to wear them as your dentist instructed you. You should only take your Invisalign off when you are eating and when you are brushing your teeth. Other than that, you should wear the trays for the majority of the day, including at night when you are sleeping.

If you fail to wear your Invisalign as recommended, the treatment will not be successful and you will have to wear the trays for longer.
