Your Wisdom Tooth Extraction Surgery Will Be Completely Painless

You won’t have to worry about any pain during your surgery. Dr. Major or Dr. Krenzke will use a numbing needle to thoroughly numb the area of your mouth around each wisdom tooth that’s being extracted. You may feel some pressure during the process, but you will not feel any pain during your surgery.

You May Experience Some Pain And Discomfort For A Few Days After Your Surgery

Once your numbing starts to wear off, you will feel some pain near your extraction sites. This is normal, and it will fade over time. Most patients experience some level of discomfort for about 3-5 days after their procedure. After about a week, your mouth will feel mostly normal, and the extraction site will be fully healed within about two weeks.

Tips On Reducing Discomfort After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

After your appointment at Fox Point Dental Studio, your dentist will provide you with a full set of instructions on how to speed up your recovery and reduce pain after your treatment. Here are just a few of the steps you can take to reduce pain and discomfort after your wisdom tooth extraction:

• Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication – If you had a complex extraction, you may get a prescription for pain medication, which you should fill and take as directed. However, most patients will just take over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help with pain and discomfort.
• Ice the outside of your mouth – This works particularly well for the first day or two after surgery, which is when swelling tends to peak. You can apply ice or a cold compress to the outside of your mouth near the treatment site for up to 30 minutes at a time to help with your pain.
• Eat soft foods – Soft foods and liquid foods are easy to eat, and don’t put a lot of pressure on your jaws or teeth. This helps reduce pain and discomfort. As you recover, you can introduce firmer foods back into your diet.
• Take a day or two off of work – Some patients go right back to work or school after a wisdom tooth extraction. But when possible, we recommend taking a day or two off to help you recover more quickly.
• Avoid heavy exercise for a few days – Exercising increases blood flow and pressure, which can cause bleeding and may also lead to more pain and discomfort. We recommend avoiding exercise and heavy exertion for at least three days after your surgery.
