Dental implants and dentures are both used to replace missing teeth in Fox Point, but these procedures are very different. So in this blog from Fox Point Dental Studio, we’ll take a look at a few of the key differences between each of these procedures.
With proper care, most patients keep their implants for the rest of their lives. The lifespan of a dental implant can easily be 30 years or longer. This makes them the longest-lasting method of tooth replacement used in dentistry today.
Dentures don’t last nearly as long. Full dentures usually last between 5 and 10 years. Partial dentures tend to last slightly longer, though, with a lifespan of somewhere between 10 and 15 years.
Dentures are less expensive than dental implants in the short term, and are usually at least partially covered by dental insurance. This makes them a good option if you’re on a tight budget.
Dental implants are more costly, and typically aren’t covered by dental insurance. However, their expected 30+ lifespan does help make up for this high initial cost, so implants are still quite cost-effective.
Dentures have the edge here. This depends on your case, but a set of dentures can usually be made in less than a month if you do not need additional treatments like tooth extractions.
Dental implants, on the other hand, usually take a minimum of 6-7 months, and more time may be necessary if you require additional pre-treatment surgeries like bone grafting.
Overall, dental implants tend to be more comfortable and convenient than dentures. They do not move or shift, and while there are some exceptions, your implant restorations will usually be permanently attached to your teeth, and don’t have to be removed to clean your teeth.
In contrast, dentures may move slightly when you eat, chew, or speak. Both full and partial dentures should be removed at night to let your mouth rest, and also must be regularly removed for cleaning, making them a bit less convenient.
Both dental implants and dentures are very versatile. It’s possible to restore just one or two teeth with a dental implant or a partial denture.
And, thanks to advances in modern dental technology, it’s also possible to use multiple dental implants to replace several missing teeth, or to replace a full arch of missing teeth, similarly to dentures.
So whether you’re missing one, several, or all of your teeth, both dental implants and dentures could be viable options for restoring your smile.
