What Can Invisalign Not Fix?

Invisalign is one of the latest and most popular technologies used in orthodontics. It was created to give patients a more discreet and more comfortable alternative to traditional metal and ceramic braces. 

But, is Invisalign a solution to all orthodontic problems, or does it have limitations? Here's a quick answer. 

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a type of clear aligner therapy that utilizes a set of clear acrylic trays used to correct orthodontic issues like overbites, underbites, crossbites, and gaps between teeth. The trays are custom-made using 3D models of the patient's teeth and adjusted to correct misaligned teeth. 

The patient wears each tray for about 2 weeks before moving onto the next tray in the set, which helps adjust the teeth even further. The trays are removable and the patient can brush and floss normally, which makes this option attractive for many persons in need of orthodontic treatment. 

What Can’t Invisalign Fix?

While clear aligners are able to correct minor and moderate orthodontic issues, they do have their limitations. Traditional braces are fitted individually on each tooth and connected through wires and elastics that are adjusted to pull the teeth in the right direction. Aligners are made using molds, and they can’t always change the position of teeth too drastically. 

Here are the types of issues Invisalign cannot fix:

• Teeth That Are Short, Pegged, or Round: The Invisalign trays won’t be able to grip onto the teeth enough for the treatment to be effective. 
  

• Large Gaps Between Teeth: Invisalign can correct gaps that are up to 6 mm wide, but anything beyond that must be corrected with a more powerful orthodontic system. 
  

• Teeth That Are Crooked Beyond a Certain Angle: If one or more of your teeth need a rotation larger than 20 degrees to be corrected, Invisalign will not be able to correct them. 
  

• Having Other Types of Dental Devices Fitted in: Dental bridges and other types of devices might make Invisalign impossible to use.
  

• Extrusion or Intrusion Problems: Invisalign cannot raise or lower teeth.
